Community Map

A pro-bono competition entitled Walk Stop to design and fabricate a rotating map and way finding installation at the corner of one of busiest intersections in the Lower Haight.

Why?

The Community Map was intended as an homage to the rich history of the Lower Haight. Connecting neighborhood “stories” to their spatial location in the urban fabric, the map locates cultural, artistic and historical spaces and displays them at the crux of the most traversed intersection.

The steel drum can be rotated around on the existing red column, encouraging play and interactivity from passersby. The installation was designed to be removable and editable in case of changes or vandalism.

After several iterations with community leaders and fabricators, the final design locates 23 “Lower Haight Stories”, 7 significant murals or art installations and 5 additional resources.

The team decided to go with a retro looking color scheme, speaking the the neighborhoods rich history and culture.

The map also responded to the site in its scale and design intent. Because it is intended to be installed in three equal sections, continuity and readability were important considerations.
